7th March 2019R Dixon

World Book Day was a fun day in Violet class.  Miss Trunchbull taught all the children and some of the costumes were fantastic.  As you can see in the photos, although we had lots of fun and giggles, the children all worked very hard!! Thank you for making this whole day special!

Engineering Geniuses!!

6th March 2019R Dixon

Today the first session of our Primary Engineer Course began after school.  The chosen children were a delight and along with Mrs Dixon, Mrs Frazer and Miss Guthrie they all worked hard to achieve and enjoyed themselves.  We have already got some innovative ideas from the children about what kind of vehicle they would like to create.  We will update you each week as the work grows…for now here are some photos from the beginning!

Code is Cool!

6th February 2019R Dixon

Violet class have been coding and debugging (working out problems) at The Word today. We have learned so much, not only about coding and putting instructions into the computer to make things happen, but also how to work together as a team to achieve something that was quite difficult. Lots of children kept trying even though their models didn’t work as first, and those that persevered were rewarded as their models were fantastic! Thank you to Mrs Hayward for all our learning today. Another big thanks to the parent helpers!

Indigo OpenZone Trip

5th February 2019F Frazer

We have enjoyed yet another fantastic trip at the OpenZone at ‘The Word’ today it’s been all about coding. We used ‘wedo’ Lego to build moving models, we wrote the code to make them move using coding software for ‘wedo’. We also explored a free ‘coding’ website called hour of code. We had to make the angry birds squash the pig by following our code (instructions). Huge thanks to Mrs C from the OpenZone for helping us do some great learning about coding.

Violet’s Fun in China town!

28th January 2019R Dixon
Year 2

Learning week commencing 28th January

28th January 2019R Dixon

English – this week we are building on our recount work and will be writing about our trip to China town.  We have learned that recounts must be:

in the past tense

in the right order with a title and subheadings

be interesting.

We have already looked at our trip photographs and put them in the right order.  We are also learning to use words like first, next, then, a while later and finally to order the events of our day.

Maths – we are learning about fractions again – halving and quartering shapes.  We are also learning about fraction equivalents for example one half is the same as two quarters.  We are remembering how to write fractions using the notation 1/2 and 1/4.  Look our for some homework on this later this week!

Curriculum – We are artists this week, and will be learning about the Chinese Willow story and patterns on plates and cups.  We will be using blue, black and white colours, to create different shades of blue, this pattern will then be put onto our own paper plates.

Indigo Class Trip to China Town

28th January 2019F Frazer

Last Thursday we enjoyed a fantastic trip to China Town to support our learning in Geography. We have been learning about the country of China in Asia and the Chinese Culture. as part of this we went to China Town in Newcastle. We looked at the beautiful arch as you arrive in China town, we then walked up Stowell Street searching for Chinese writing and lanterns. We visited the Chinese supermarket where we bought some decorations to help us to begin thinking about Chinese New Year. We then went on to a Chinese restaurant called Laus 202 where we were treated to a delicious Chinese Meal. What an excellent trip! Exemplary behavior from all of our children too, well done!

New Year Cocktails!

9th January 2019R Dixon

We have been learning how to read scales that go up in 10’s.  This week we have returned to school and loved making our cocktails.  Here is our recipe if you would like to try it at home!

50 ml of pomegranate juice

60 ml of mango juice

70 ml of orange juice

Try and let your child use a jug to measure out their own ingredients, they did very well at school!  We have also been learning that there are 1000 ml in 1 litre.
