We’re Going On a Bear Hunt

3rd March 2020E Heaton

Our Talk for Writing text this term has been ”We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” By Micheal Rosen

The nursery children traveled to Boldon lodge for their own bear hunt. We walked through the forest ‘stumble trip stumble trip’ following the bears footprints. We walked through a real snow storm ‘hooo whoo’ and found a bear on the train.

We went back to the lodge and warmed ourselves up with marshmallows around the log burner. We made a bear decoration and were visited by Boldon Bear. We learnt a new song that Boldon Bear taught up ”Teddy bear Teddy bear turn around”

Beamish

14th January 2020F Frazer

Last Thursday our year 2 classes had a great visit to Beamish. We went there as part of history week where we were learning about changes in transport over time and influential people such as the ‘Wright brothers’ who invented the motorised plane. It flew for the first time on December 17th 1903. Without inventors like the ‘wright brothers’ we wouldn’t be able to travel as far or as fast as we do today.

Beamish houses a variety of different types of transport form the early 1900s and beyond. We has a brilliant time finding out about the ‘Penny Farthing’ bike. We learned that it got its name as the large ‘front wheel’ resembled the size of a 1900s ‘penny’ while smaller back wheel resembled the 1900s ‘farthing’. It was very tall and would have been difficult and uncomfortable to ride.

We rode the tram around the museum, they’re very beautiful inside, though the seats were wooden and rather hard. Children even got the chance to be ‘conductor’ ringing the bell to signal we were ready for the off!

We were fascinated by the large ‘limousine’ style car, the horn was really hard to press and made a funny noise. We could fit lots of people in the back!

Children took a ride on an old bus. The seats went down the sides of the bus rather than one in front of the other like we have today. We even stopped off to visit the horses who pulled carriages, another interesting form of early transport.

We visited the 1900s school and found the teacher very strict! She told us to sit up straight and write on slate boards. We also couldn’t resist picking up a little treat from the sweet shop in the 1900s town. What a great day had by all!

Armistice Day 2019

11th November 2019F Frazer

This morning we took a group of representatives form our school to the cenotaph in the West Park to pay our respects to those who have fought and lost their lives in wars of the past and more recent conflicts. The children who came along were brilliant role models for our school. Their behaviour and respectfulness were exemplary.

We were joined by children form other schools, veterans who served our country, the Mayor, members of other uniformed services and of course members of the public. It was a lovely service led by Father Mervyn.

Biddick Hall Infant and Nursery School remembers…

Lest we forget.

Welcome to Nursery!

We have had a very busy first few weeks in nursery. We have been learning how to share and to be kind to friends. We can take part in large and small group times. We have played outside in the yard, in the park and have even dressed our selves to jump in the puddles when its raining. Ask your child about our autumn songs, Big Red Combine Harvester and Autumn Leaves, we have been doing wonderful singing with actions.

Glittery Germs!

20th September 2019F Frazer

In science we have been learning about how good hygiene is important to humans as it helps keep us safe and healthy. We did some experiments in class to show the importance of hand washing. One of our friends had glitter all over their hands and they went around the classroom touching various objects such as door handles and pencils. We were amazed to see how quickly the germs spread! We easily solved the problem by washing the germs off our hands and classroom objects with soap and water.

We explored how germs ‘don’t like’ soap by completing another experiment. We dropped glitter (germs) into a bowl of water. When we dipped our finger in the glitter (germs) stuck to it quickly. However, when we put soap on our finger the glitter (germs) moved away from our finger. Logan said “Its like the germs are scared of the soap!” We all agreed it’s best to wash our hands regularly with soap and water.

Year 2 Tips for good hygiene:

  1. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water.
  2. cover your mouth with your hands when you cough or sneeze (Don’t forget to wash your hands after)
  3. Use a tissue to wipe your nose. Put it in the bin when you are finished!

Chicks have hatched!

3rd April 2019K Meads

The chicks starting pipping around the eggs on Tuesday and we could see some eggs moving around the incubator. On Wednesday, we came into school and had 3 new chicks. As we started our learning for the day, we set up a live camera on the IPad and we watched some more chicks hatching live!  The children were lucky enough to see lots of the eggs crack and experienced how the chicks hatch out of their shells slowly.

The children were able to see the life cycle of the chicks and have learnt lots of information about the process. They have all written names for the chicks and had a hold of them. Reception have even had the chicks out on the carpet and created a maze for them to try.

The children have had a wonderful experience, Happy Easter everyone!
